For this week, we are turning to an apelike animal cryptid rumored to inhabit the Appalachian Piedmont region of Leesburg - however we have also seen evidence of previous inhabitance along the rolling hills of Damascus.
Dear The Raph,
ESPN-Page 2 produced the following article stating that relief pitcher is the most overated position in sports:
My initial reaction (without even reading the whole article): Even though linebackers and running backs are a dime a dozen, the attached study is pretty darn convincing. Your thoughts?

Well sir, to answer this question, I will open up the forum. Leave your comments, lets start a blog post comment argument. That way you can pretend to know what your talking about by quoting obscure sources and stuff…

First!
I enjoy the closer role only for the humor factor. I get to make fun of K-Rod and his awesome antics on the mound for being a complete douchebag and thinking that what he is doing is an amazing feat of athleticism.
Who are they pointing to anyways? It’s not a tribute to someone if you act like an ass.

The proof is in the pudding…
Since 1901, a lead after 8 innings has held up 95% of the time. That number has not dwindled inspite of steroids, juiced balls, and smaller strikezones.
What the study did not show is the likability factor of closers has also gone down. Will there once again be effective closers that you will be able to like such as Dennis Eckersley and Rod Beck?

K-Rod? Feh.
I’ll take Dave Giusti and Kent Tekulve any day.

All I can say is god bless the rule that demands one representative from each team make the all star game. In 2002, the Pirates illustrious ‘closer’ Mike Williams was the teams lone representative. This from Wikipedia, tells you all you need to know about the second most famous closer named Williams…
In his career, he posted a record of 32-54 with 144 saves and a 4.45 ERA. When he was selected to the 2002 All-Star game, he set the record for being the pitcher with the highest E.R.A. while making an all-star team. He still remains the only pitcher to play in an all-star game while having an ERA of over 6.00 during the same regular season.
His style for closing out games was unorthodox, as it involved him getting himself into a jam, but then getting out of it.
Yes…an ERA OVER 6. So basically if he came in in the 9th inning in a save situation, there was at least a 66% chance that the opposing team would score a run…god damn.

Agreed with The Raph.
K-Rod’s antics are very similar to Bill Murray rolling in the championship game in Kingpin
